Whether it is for the money or the gratitude of being able to help people or both, many individuals today are making the decision to become a lawyer. In order to survive in the cut-throat law industry, it is crucial that you market yourself effectively. Here are three things that you need to know as a new, young lawyer:
1. Narrow Down Your Area of Expertise.
To be most successful as a lawyer, the best thing that you can do is to figure out a particular area of law that you want to practice in. This could be business, personal injury, criminal law, or something else entirely. Once you have this figured out, then you need to narrow it down further to a particular niche within that market. For example, within personal injury law, you may to focus only on auto accidents. This way, when you market yourself, you are advertising yourself to a more specific audience, which allows your marketing budget to be used much more wisely than if you were a general practice lawyer.
2. Get Close to Your Competition.
An easy way to market your firm is to get close to your competition, the opposing counsel. You need to always be reasonable and professional. You want to earn their respect and prove to them that you are a good lawyer. Once the case is over, take the time to develop the relationship with them. Offer to take them out for drinks or lunch. Remain in contact with them. What this will do for you is potentially send business your way in the future. There are instances when a conflict of interest can arise in a case and a lawyer is unable to take it on. When this happens, the lawyer may refer the clients to another lawyer, which could be you if you play your cards right. And, believe it or not, many lawyers on opposing ends are actually good friends.
3. Figure Out What Works for You.
You need to take a look at your lifestyle and personality to see what will work for you in terms of marketing yourself as a lawyer. For each attorney, it is different. Some lawyers will go to happy hour or lunch to bolster relationships, while others will work on writing publications or speaking at conferences to establish themselves as industry experts. You must find what makes you comfortable and essentially something that you will enjoy because marketing is hard work.
Marketing your own law firm is no easy task. However, you don't have to do it all on your own, which is good news as a new lawyer. If you have the capital, it may be a good idea to reach out to an attorney marketing service for assistance in getting your firm's name out there.Share
